In 1959 Phillip “Shakin” Baker made his debut as lead guitarist / singer with the Canadian rock’n’roll band the Del-Tones. Their first release was the 1959 rockabilly single “Moonlight Party / Rockin Blues”. Phil Baker is also the birth father of the artist we know as Big John Bates. Apple meet tree.
In 1960 they changed their name to the Beau-Marks and were Internationally acclaimed with their #1 Canadian hit single "Clap Your Hands" (Top 40 in the US). They were the first band to headline the Peppermint Lounge in New York City, were appeared on the Ed Sullivan show, American Bandstand and Carnegie Hall.
At some point in the two years between 1959 and his return in 1961 Phil and the Beau-Marks made their way into a studio in Toronto (Le Coq D’Or perhaps?) and recorded two songs. Phil wrote the A-Side “Joanie, Joanie” and teh B-side is “Back to School Hop” designed to get folks onto the dance floor in the early rock’n’roll tradition.
We lost Phil in 2023 (#fuckcancer) at which time this 78 single was discovered by his son Bryce Baker. Between Bryce and Big John Bates the songs were digitized and are now available for download through Frontman Records.
We hope you enjoy this unknown slice of Canadiana - all money collected will be donated to fighting cancer.
